First let me start off with I am trying to convert my 99.5 style shifter to a later style shifter. Make sure the 'tab' on the shaft is facing the front of the car, and the 'cup' goes into the slot facing the passengers side of the car. Here is the replacement (not sure if 100% accurate or matches code from new) The things I am not clear on are mainly pros cons of 02j shift mechanism + issues with the starter motor + ratios of the new gearboxĬCM=3.300=1.944=1.308=1.034=0.838=3.389=VR6 Passat, Jetta, Golf Also, the whole thing is much more durable. So far options are 02j with 02a shift mechanism keep the restĠ2j with 02j shift mechanism replace shifter with mk4 with some mods The shifter doesn't feel like a pile of goo and the clutch actually works- you can shift in the 8000-8500 rpm region no problem- try that with an 02j. If anyone can confirm this or let me know what parts from original mk3 02a setup can be used and what cant be used. This one should also have the 108mm flanges (non bolt type) for Vr6 I have read in other forums that the 02a starter motor wont fit & needs to be one from 02J and that the shift mechanism (in car) needs to be from mk4 too. 2002 Beetle TDI, 1999.5 & 2006 Jetta TDIs. ![]() Didn't do squat for me, and from what I've read one or two other people have tried with the same poor result.Cool so some more info the exact code I am looking at Oh yeah, someone was dead sold on heating up the tower in the oven and that the bearing would just about fall out. I was transferring it to a new (rebuilt) transmission and thought that now was the time to do this. There wasn't anything apparently wrong with this shift tower. The rubber washer actually installs over the shaft. The ordering top to bottom of the bits: seal, bearing and then rubber washer. Used a screwdriver and hammer on the top lip (once it was exposed enough) to get it the rest of the way out. I used a chisel from the top to catch the slight lip (lip on either end to keep bearing cage in place) and was able to start driving it out. I used a Dremel sanding drum (small), three of them, to cut away enough material that I could bend and snap off some of the shell metal: this is from the bottom edge. This missing bearing might be why 5th gear disappeared. Also my stock BEW tower bolt had a washer under it, whereas the 2000 at the yard did not. Wasnt sure what it does, so im on here asking how much it matters. This extra bolt with a key sticking out is from my EUH. There was a rubber washer in the kit I got. I own a 05 Bew w/ o2j EUH transmission i pulled the tower cap from a 2000 jetta 2.0L and noticed this difference. Is that lever called the "shift adjustment pin" in post #16 of this thread? It was in there so good the tacks would break off and take some race with them. Nothing to grab so I tacked some welds to the inside. Might get an answer to my rubber washer question.ĭamn that was just as nasty as some of the pics I've seen.
